Applying for U.S. citizenship is a major life event, and the Form N-400 is the first step in the naturalization process. To be eligible, you must meet several key requirements:

  • Permanent Residency: You must have been a green card holder for at least five years. This is reduced to three years if you're applying as the spouse of a U.S. citizen and meet all other requirements.

  • Physical Presence: You must have been physically present in the U.S. for at least 30 months out of the last five years. If applying through marriage, the requirement is at least 18 months out of the last three years.

  • Continuous Residence: You must have continuously resided in the U.S. as a lawful permanent resident for the required five or three years.

  • Good Moral Character: You must demonstrate good moral character, with no serious criminal history, immigration violations, or fraudulent activity.

  • English & Civics Test: You need to show basic English proficiency and pass a U.S. history and government test.
